APPROACHING THE TOWN OF VITI
NATURAL LANDSCAPE FIRST REAL GLIMPSE OF VITI
THE VERY OLD TOWN OF VITI, CHIOS, GREECE ______________
_______________
We're approaching the monastery now. It is very old. It goes back to 1300 A.D. That's seven hundred years. We see signs that an attempt is being made to rebuild the monastery. To our minds, Duke's and mine, it seems fine the way it is. We have lost too much of our history. And yes, the meek will inherit the earth, living in quiet places too unimportant to be bombed into oblibion. _________________

MONASTERY GHOST STRUCTURAL DETAIL ________________
One can almost see the black-robed monks with their robes flowing, walking through the streets and climbing the ancient stone steps. ________________
Perhaps this tiled roof is as far as the workmen got in their attempt to make the past new again. Maybe it was the fires that drove them away so suddenly that they left me a gift on the pile of debris in front. ________________
The cross remains, representing, as do symbols of all the great religions, holding steadfast to the truth that forgetting the self and being kind to others continues as the key to a peaceful earth. __________________

MONASTERY STREET THE WATER-COLOR Leaving the monastery , we walked through the gate you see in the painting. Off to the left we we saw a pile of what was basically garbage, except that it had dried. There were old , crushed soda cans. It didn't seem to have been used for a long time. I poked into it with a stick. The stick hit something that had been perhaps discarded by accident. I pulled it out. With it came a tile. ______________________
I couldn't believe my eyes. Had it been discarded? Had it been dropped in a great rush from the fires? I tucked it into my sweater. When we got back to the house, our host warned me. Things like this must not be removed from the country. I am taking good care of it until it is ready to make its way back to the Mondoun Monastery. * In front of the tile in the second photo is a lovely little sculpture that was done by the gentleman who taught me how to create this website. He is a fine artist. And how appropriate it feels! * The monastery is described in my poem "A Lunar Month In Greece" which you can find in the Table of Contents. _________________________ (continue to THE BEAUTIFUL ISLAND OF SANTORINI)
