WAITING FOR THE TRIP BACK READY TO RETURN Most people take the donkey ride to get down to and up from the port. (Perhaps mostly up; I don't see any people on the donkeys going down on these photos I took. ) We walked both ways, and it was so lovely. I'm not sure whether the bit of land in the NEARING THE PORT photo is an edge of the broken circle of land that comprises Santorini, or whether it's the volcanic island in the middle of the caldera. The volcanic explosion took place about 1500 B.C. About half the total surface of Santorini (called Stronghyle at the time) sank into the water, creating the world's largest caldera, or inland sea. One can see the volcanic island from our little cottage. The waters of the sea are serene, and very beautiful. From this port, a ferry takes tourists to explore the volcanic island. Recreational swimming takes place on the outer side of the main island on this northern tip, and is mostly protected by the high, volcanic hills that seem to outline the island. Bathing suits are not generally bothered with. _______________________ (continue to Santorini-The WINERY)
